Mikael Rylander is focused on steering technology innovation for Nokia in this rapid digital acceleration toward the quantum era. He is responsible for driving Nokia’s technology leadership and its technology strategy as well as defining Nokia’s long-term technology vision. Mikael guides Nokia’s direction in critical future network architectures like 5G-Advanced and 6G. His team maps out strategy for AI, machine-learning and cloud systems, security and privacy technologies, and sustainable innovation. While keeping one eye on Nokia’s future, he keeps the other eye focused on industry and global trends to identify the opportunities on which Nokia can capitalize.

Before taking on his current leadership role at Nokia, Mikael worked at Mavenir. There he served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Radio Units Business and led the development of its 4G and 5G RAN portfolio, effectively transforming Mavenir from a core and messaging software provider into a full-stack virtualized mobile network vendor.

Prior to Mavenir, Mikael had a long tenure at Ericsson, holding multiple executive roles in R&D and product development. He worked across the range of Ericsson’s radio portfolio from the 2G era onwards, contributing to the development of GSM, WCMA, TD-SCDMA, LTE, 5G and transport products. Mikael played a key role in bringing to market Ericsson’s massive MIMO 5G radios in the sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands.

Given the depth and breadth of his experience in every generation of communications technology for the last three decades, Mikael is uniquely positioned for the strategic visionary role with which Nokia has entrusted him. He was on the front lines as telecom’s focus shifted from voice to data to cloud, from fixed networks to mobility, and he is already well versed in the industry’s latest transformation towards the Network Cloud continuum.
