Speaker Bio

Elena Estavillo leads and is the founder of Centro-i for the Society of the Future (https://centroi.org), an independent think tank working for a technological future that is ethical, responsible and inclusive. As a commissioner in Federal Institute of Telecommunications, the telecoms, internet and media regulator in Mexico, she engaged in the ethical consequences of artificial intelligence and digital technologies, and advocates for multi-stakeholder governance. She currently chairs the Executive Council for the Digital Economy in Mexico.


She led UNESCO’s AI Readiness Assessment in Mexico and is a member of Women 4 Ethical Artificial Intelligence, a platform created by UNESCO to provide a unique space for global leaders in frontier technologies to combine their strengths and influence to achieve the goal of implementing UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence with a gender lens. She also contributed to draft UNESCO’s recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence.


As an appointed member of the Expert Group for the UN Commission on the Status of Women, she gave advice on innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. 


Finalist as Woman in AI of the Year in North America 2023, awarded by Women in AI.


She was named Gender Trendsetter 2022-2023 of the World Summit on the Information Society of the International Telecommunication Union and was also recognized as a 5G Trailblazer by Ericsson.


She is an independent Board Member for Tecnológico de Monterrey, Grupo Proa and Derex Desarrollo Residencial. And also serves as board member for the Cyber Policy Dialogue of the Americas, the International Women's Forum (IWF) Mexico chapter, and co-founder of Conectadas (www.conectadas.org), a network of women leaders in the digital ecosystem.


Dr. Elena Estavillo is ALI Harvard Fellow 2023; with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico; Master in Mathematical Economics and PhD in Economics from the University of Paris; with an executive certificate in Management and Leadership from MIT.
